An analogy about health care reform.
Fizzy's told me a lot about the health care system in Australia. It's not perfect, and she can tell you how it works and what's wrong with it but it's a hell of a lot better than what we have. And let's say Australia's system is LiveJournal... the USA needs a Dreamwidth. (Fizzy says Australia needs a Dreamwidth too, by the way.)
It will have the benefit of going through the base code line by line (i.e., looking at other national health care systems), keeping what does work, and fixing or tossing what doesn't.
And like Dreamwidth, it won't be perfect right away, it'll need the equivalent of an open beta, and it'll have the equivalent of multiple bug fixes as we see what works and what doesn't. It won't ever be perfect, but it would be constantly improved.
It can be done. I just know it.
It just requires that our legislators not suck.
